How to Choose the Right Blog Niche: A Simple Three-Step Method

Picking a profitable blog niche that is of personal interest can be a difficult process, not to mention that you’ll have to single out a niche amongst an almost infinite number of unique topics.

Not all blog niches are inherently profitable because the topic you choose, often determines the future size and profitability of your blog to some extent.

It is important to pick a niche that you have genuinely interest in because the natural passion you have for the topic sustains the content creation process and will actually make the whole chore of blogging enjoyable.

In this post, I’ll outline some of the methods you can use to select an appropriate blog niche that is not only potentially profitable but challenging and relevant to your interests.

Characteristics of the Ideal Blog Niche

Here’s a list of the factors which I personally think, constitute the ideal blog niche:

Personal interest in topics within the niche. You enjoy reading, learning and writing about these blog topics.
Networking foundation. You are already active in several networking groups or forums within the niche.
Moderate to high search volume. The blog niche has a moderate to high search volume, meaning that people actually do search for more information on the topic.
Potential for Monetization. Ideally, you’ll want a blog niche that actually serves up relevant contextual ads or has a range of affiliate programs which are at least partially relevant to your audience’s needs.

My method of choosing a niche is surprisingly straightforward and the research process is very easy to perform. You should be able to pick a suitable niche in an hour or much lesser, by using the simple three step method that I’ve outlined below.

Step #1: Narrow your Interests

This is the logical place to start because blogging about something you have a natural interest for is personally enriching. What I usually do is to pick a few general topics I’m interested in and put them through a couple of websites and tools.

Recommended Tool: Wikipedia.

You can use search engines to perform niche research but I particularly like using Wikipedia to narrow down my focus in a specific field because articles in Wikipedia are very well interlinked and are generally informative.

For example, see this Wikipedia page on surfing. In the first paragraph itself, there are links to several topics related to surfing, such as surf boards, wind surfing and big wave surfing.

Scroll down to the end of the page and you’ll see even more subsections like surf culture, surf music and surfing competitions.

Wikipedia can also be used as an informational tool which gives you more background on any topic. thereby allowing you to eventually decide if it is something you want to pursue.

You should end up with a short list of niches you want to target, which leads you to the next step.

Step #2: Assess the Traffic Potential for the Niche

To assess the size and potential of a niche involves discovering the number of people who actually search for information on the given topic.

This is important because you don’t want to be pursuing a niche that is inherently limited by its weak organic search traffic.

Now is not the time to target your actual keywords so you don’t need to always go for the high volume search terms. As long as the overall search volume is moderate, that should be fine.

Recommended Tool: SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool

I like using this tool because of several reasons: It provides suggested monthly regional search volumes by market for Google, Yahoo!, and MSN and churns out direct links to Wordtracker, Keyword Discovery and Google trends, all of which are other tools you can use.

After typing your keyword (e.g. surfing) into the search box, you should focus on the vertical length of the results instead of the actual search volume for the keyword.

The length of the list determines how deep you can go with this specific topic and also how many keywords you can effectively target for traffic. This is an important point: Never focus exclusively on the main niche keyword but the overall search depth for the niche topic.

Once you have found a suitable niche with a moderate search volume, you’ll need to run a quick check on its monetization and profit potential.

Step #3: Determine the Monetization and Profit potential for your Niche

This step is fairly simple. There are two ways to monetize any new blog: One is advertising networks (e.g. Google Adsense, Auction Ads) and the other method is the use of relevant affiliate programs from websites. Let’s split this section up into two.

Recommended Tools for ad networks:

Google Adwords Traffic Estimator and Google’s Adwords Keyword Tool.

These are currently two tools which can provide a rough estimate for the profitability of a niche. While the results are limited to Google Adwords/Adsense, I think they are reliable indicators of the niche’s general potential.

Here’s what you’ll see from Google Adwords Traffic Estimator after I did some basic keyword searches:

While other information such as the estimated cost and clicks per day are included, you’ll only need to focus on the figures in the estimated average CPC column.

Generally, the higher the Cost per Click amount, the more the advertiser has to pay and hence its possible that you’ll earn more by creating content which reflects that specific keyword.

On the other hand, the Google Adwords Keyword Tool gives you a lot of keyword suggestions, each with their search volume or average CPC. You’ll just have to type in one main keyword and the tool will generate a list of results.

For example, here is an example of some results when I type in ‘web hosting‘.

This basically gives you an estimate of the monetary value of all the longtail keywords you will be naturally targeting when you are writing in depth on a topic.

A word of caution: Don’t just go for the keywords with the top CPC averages because these are usually targeted by many other webmasters as well. Generally, if your niche has a Adwords CPC average of $2-3, it should be profitable while allowing a low barrier of entry for new websites.

Recommended Tool for affiliate programs: Search engines + Affiliate networks

The easiest way to find affiliate programs for your niche is to do a google search for your niche keyword + “affiliate program“. You’ll usually be able to tell at once if there are adequate programs available.

In any case, there are also a large number of affiliate networks such as Commission Junction, Shareasale and Click Bank so there shouldn’t be any difficulties in finding affiliate programs for most niches.

Seven Day Niche Blog Challenge: Update #2

So far everything is going well. I enjoy setting up new blogs, even though the process can be repetitive. I’ve largely followed the three steps that I’ve mentioned above while picking my niches, although I did perform some alternative research to develop a more rounded social media outlook on the niche.

Here are two additional tips, both of which I personally use in addition to the three steps I’ve listed above.

Additional Tip #1: Use Community Specific Searches for Buzz Value

The method emphasizes on performing site-specific searches on various social websites and forums to assess the overall popularity of the term.

I’m going to focus on quite a bit of social media marketing alongside the usual search optimization so its very helpful for me to know the popularity and traffic value of a specific term within the social community in question.

For example Fan Forum is the largest online celebrity forum on the internet. If I wanted to promote my content on the forum, I need to know if the sub-niche or topic is widely mentioned and hence attractive to the forum users.

Here’s an example of what I would do if I were performing research on the topic of Lindsay Lohan.

Open a new browser window and go to google.com. After which, type in the following command:

site:fanforum.com lindsay lohan

Which would bring me to this search results page with a list of the number of times Lindsay Lohan, or the niche topic is mentioned. According to Google, there are 1,410 results for this term on fanforum.com alone.

On the other hand if you were to do a similar search for Chuck Norris, you’ll only come up with 3 search result terms. This just means that Lindsay is hot in Fan Forum and unfortunately, Chuck is not.

To get the same information on other websites, you’ll just have to replace fanforum.com with the url of the site you want to explore in detail.

Additional Tip #2: Use SearchSpy tools for Out-of-Box Research

If you absolutely can’t think of any interests or are far too lazy to do any research at all, fear not for there is still a solution. Some search engines often have a spy page which allows you to see what people are searching for in real time.

Dogpile’s SearchSpy tool is one tool that I recommend. Basically all you’ll need to do is to sit back and passively view the stream of searches that show up on the screen. When you see one that interests you, middle click on it to open it in a new tab. After you feel that you’ve opened enough tabs. Click off the spy page and then sort through the results.

This is a an excellent way to think out of the box and I’ve come up with some valuable niche topics with this method. It’s also a more relaxing way to go about the process of selecting a blog niche.

I usually run Dogpile for a few minutes at the end of the day to see if I encounter something worth researching in detail.

It is important to note that search spy sites do not offer package solutions, I’ll still recommend that you run some of the niches that you’ve found through the three steps I’ve listed above.

Could Ads On Blogs Be Growing Up?

Steve Rubel theorises on the rise of blog advertising in his post "As Portal Inventory Dwindles, Will Ads on Blogs Rise" . He makes a good point - with portal inventory booked for months ahead surely it's time for some big bucks ad dollars to find their way into the cream of the blogosphere. Certainly, Steve points to some tantalising evidence on TechWeb that "Advertising executives see blogs, podcasts and web-enabled cellular phones as newcomers in the market that are worth watching, but have yet to prove they're worth as major investments, a survey released Tuesday showed."

My heart tells me that blog advertising maybe approaching an important cross roads, going from an unruly teenager if you like, to a fully paid up adult of media society. But my head tells me that the cross roads is being called too early, as is alluded to in the "worth watching, but yet to prove worth" bit of the above statement. Almost in paralell to some of my statements about where "blogging in general currently sits" in my post The Wider Implications of Business Blog Survey my belief is that blog advertising proper has some growing up to do on a number of fronts.

I'm not being a stick in the mud for saying this - it's what I think is an objective assessment, based on recent experiences in the advertising agency environment. However, what I ultimately believe this boils down to is a question of time and acceptance into the mainstream. How long will that take is an interesting question? I think we have already seen tentative toes dipped into the water and that will probably be the form for another six months to year. In terms of when we might see consistent multi million dollar ad inventory commitments I think we're potentially looking at 18 months - 2 years. But who really knows!

A Click To Call Future For Ads

Ads On Blogs discussed Pay Per Call Advertising some months ago, which was a technology being developed by America Online along with other partners including Ingenio and backed by eBay and Microsoft - to transform ad clicks into a direct telephone call.

It now seems Google has taken the bull by the horns and done a limited release to some parts of the USA of a very similar technology. Who said Google was innovative? Google explain how it works:

"Here’s how it works: When you click the phone icon, you can enter your phone number. Once you click ‘Connect For Free,’ Google calls the number you provided. When you pick up, you hear ringing on the other end as Google connects you to the other party. Then, chat away on our dime." (For full details)

Blog Advertising Totters Forward

Blog advertising seems to be taking some more tottering steps towards hitting the main stream with this positive write up in the New York Timesabout the Up Your Budget treasure hunt campaign. The throng of advertisers now willing to chance their arm within the world of blogs seems to be growing and for interesting reasons. As Scott Deaver executive vice president of Budget (a car hire company) says "I've got to be smart and make my brand feel smart to the consumer. I can't just out spend Hertz," Mr. Deaver added, "but I can outsmart them."

For me this speaks volumes for how innovation is often born out of adversity, and that may well be the driving force behind the growing flirtation with blog advertising.

Also something that was of great interest in the New York Times article was how certain blogs were selected for advertising the Up Your Budget campaign. Jay Arnold, president and chief executive at the Impax Marketing Group in Philadelphia who coordinated the Budget marketing strategy outlined the process:

"With the help of a consultant, B. L. Ochman, using criteria like how frequently a blog is updated and how interesting they are to the so-called technorati. In fact, Mr. Arnold said, the tracking service technorati.comwas used to help pick the blogs."

Whilst I think Technorati is an excellent tool on a number of fronts, it is a little hard for me to accept that it will continue to be a benchmark for selecting blogs in future ad campaigns. What is really needed is a comprehensive database of blog traffic statistics. I suspect that this need will become more acute as every week passes.

Will Chitika Strike Gold With Google?

I recently wrote on Performancing about giving some consideration to your blog business exit strategy. My post was spawned from an excellent piece of journalism on Business Week titled Googling For Gold which basically looks at the phenomenon of starting niche tech businesses with the intention of selling out to Google 12 months later. It was while reading this post that I spotted a particularly intriguing paragraph:

"Google is creating a whole new ecosystem for entrepreneurs, says Baris Karadogan of U.S. Venture Partners, a high-tech VC firm in Silicon Valley. Karadogan says he's closely watching a group of entrepreneurs who are designing a highly specialized online advertising tool, hoping to sell it to Google for $50 million. "Before," he laments, "you needed a VC. Now you can build a Linux-based data system for $100,000 and survive long enough to sell without ever raising a venture round."

Umm, which company is running a beta version of a "highly specialized online advertising tool" at the moment? Is it just me, or am I seeing a Google future for Chitika!

The Commercialization of Blogging

Fascinating post on New York Times which adds further credence to the slow march of blogs into the periphery of mainstream media.

Here are some of the key points:

Bloggers who started out for fun are now finding that they have full blown businesses on their hands.
More and more companies are considering post product placement on blogs.
It's important to be honest about advertising on your blog.
However, in the words of Anita Campbell quoted on NYT "I also don't apologize for accepting advertising, and I make it clear that just like everyone else I have to earn a living and pay the expenses of keeping the site going." couldn't agree more with this sentiment.
It's becoming apparent that more businesses are noticing the influence of blogs and have spent an estimated $50 million to $100 million this year on blog advertising and marketing according toForrester Research
Interestingly US Web an online marketing firm has paid people $5 to mention a company or link to it's site. Examples includeLussori.com and Terra Entertainment who offered MySpaces users a mention on film credits if they included a trailer in their personal profile pages.
A Forrester Research survey found in February that 64 percent of US national marketers are interested in advertising on blogs.

Do you Blog for Money or Readers?

One of my new online friends Heather at Home with Heather was commenting in a recent post that she was thinking of dropping adsense from her blog as it wasn't producing anything meaningful for her. Heather is not alone as I know a number of bloggers who feel the same way. What these folks have in common is that they all produce top quality reader friendly blogs. This unfortunately is a death blow for adsense income.

Adsense works if you derive most of your traffic from the search engines. It doesn't work if you attract a loyal readership. Readers read - they come to your blog because they like your content. They may leave a comment and possibly follow links you have mentioned - what they don't do is click on ads or adsense. For the most part they don't even notice the irrelevant parts of your site once they have been back enough times. They know where your content lies and get straight to it.

Search engine traffic produces mostly first time visitors who are looking for something in particular or are just out sunday driving. If they find something of value on your blog you may gain a new reader. If they don't find what they want there is a decent chance they will click an ad or follow the adsense trail. Most, of course hit the back button and continue on their merry way.

I bring this up because we all need to ask ourselves what type of visitor are we after? Do I want readers or browsers?

When I started this blog I structured it like my my niche sites. This was not so much a conscious decision but rather an old habit. My niche sites have 1 purpose - to make money. To make money they have to produce adsense clicks and sell affiliate products. I have found a pretty successful way of doing this and without thinking about it I set this blog up the same way. It worked well for the first 6 months and then something strange happened - readers started showing up. Comments were left. People started asking questions. I suddenly had to concern myself with writing for an audience. Cool I thought.

Once I started writing as if someone might actually read my stuff I found that I could no longer experiment with adsense bait or affiliate links. The result is that while my readership has grown my income has decreased drastically. In the past I wrote articles on popular ebooks, products or the latest fad designed to attract beginners. These topics could draw a decent traffic flow from the serp's and every so often I would rank well for a winner and my adsense revenue would take off. Project Payday and Roadmap to Riches are two of my most productive keywords - they still bring in 100 plus visitors a day to this blog, visitors who do the most adsense clicking. I could slap affiliate links into my posts and know that there would be some sales.

The problem now is that I am finding it hard to experiment or "play around" with this blog as I don't want to turn off my readers. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that I have readers. I've never had any before and this is my first taste of belonging to the "community". The thing is, and you need to define this as well, what is your purpose in blogging? Do you want to be an A-list blogger? Do you want to make money? If you want to be the former then it will be hard to do the latter.

Hey, hold on there. John Chow is an A-list member and he makes lots of money. True or so he claims and I don't dispute this. The point is that he makes money selling his name. He can command money for paid reviews and advertising because he is well known and has a large readership. People pay him to get mentioned by him. Everyone and their dog pastes a link to him on their blog hoping he will acknowledge them in return. The problem is that until you become an A-lister you will not be able to make money like they do. In the meantime you can't do the things that will make you money because you wont become an A-lister if you do.

There is what, maybe a dozen people at the top and a few up and comers that might make it but after that there are millions of blogs that wont. This isn't a slight on anybody - just a numbers thing. There isn't room for a Thousand A-listers, there will always be a handful that crawl on top of the pile and reduce everyone else to B-list status. It's just the way it works.

I don't spend much time reading the A-listers - I can't remember the last time I learned anything from them that made me a dime. Really, reading about who they know and what conference they just attended doesn't make me money. I have never read a paid review - have you? Did you go to the reviewed site and spend money? (Have you paid for a review? What were the results?) I've never clicked an ad on their blogs. Sure there is lots of info available on what the IM community is doing but this doesn't make me money either. Getting visitors that click and buy is what makes money. Posting a link to John Chow doesn't get me these types of visitors. I have said this before - if your audience is Internet marketers then you will starve. IM'ers don't buy and if they do they use their own link. They don't click ads and they don't click adsense.

I got involved in this niche because it allows a blogger to increase pagerank easier than any other niche I know of. Try and get a thousand backlinks for "Ugg Boots" or "Fish Recipes". Try and get 1 high PR link. Hard to do. Niche marketers don't handout links. IM'ers do and I wanted a high PR blog so that I could use it for all sorts of things.

What am I getting at?

I guess this is my way of apologizing in advance to my readers, I want to start making money again and thought I would warn you to ignore some of the stuff you see in future - my experiments to come as it were. Or you can try it yourself. I don't want to be an A-lister, not my style and quite frankly I have always liked making money anonymously. There is less work and you can try a lot of stuff and get away with it as long as you are under the radar.

This doesn't mean I don't value my readers, I do. I just don't want to bore you to death writing about the same topics as everyone else does in the IM community. It bores me actually. And it doesn't make me money. That said if you notice some strange things on here just chalk it up to an experiment. Some will work and some will not but it keeps me interested and hopefully I can pass on what I learn to you.

Google VS The Blackhatters

A pre-amble to Making Money with Adsense

There is no doubt that Google has created a dominant search engine and the brains behind the funny name deserve credit. But it could be said that the blackhatters deserve a lot of credit as well. Without the blackhatters Google would never have developed into the engine that it has become.

Relevance is everything when it comes to search engines. When someone asks a question your results had better be relevant or no one will use your service. Next - you have to be able to provide the relevant information in order of "most" relevant to "least" relevant. Users will leave never to return if you keep giving them articles that mention their keyword in passing. Users want exact information and search engines have to provide it. Google is the best at doing this, hands down.

Google's strength and it's weakness is the pagerank system. By counting links pointing to a site, assessing the relevancy of the links and then the authority of the links Google is able to decide which site is the most relevant for any given keyword. In practice this system is fairly reliable when dealing with small/medium sites in niches with low to no advertising. There is little incentive to game the system in these niches. The accuracy of pagerank begins to breakdown as you get into niches that have a lot of advertising dollars to go around. If a person can make money doing something then there is immediate incentive to maximize ones earnings. In some cases this can be done by legitimate means and in some cases not. One could argue that the moment anyone does anything to maximize earnings - legitimate or otherwise - that the person has just gamed the system.

By using PR Google created a successful system for ranking pages on it's index. They also laid out the game plan for creating a successful site in the process. To get high rankings in the serp's you need backlinks. You now need to meet other factors as well but PR is still a major asset to have in order to climb the serp's. By this very fact Google created the Black-hatters.

From the moment PR was introduced Black-hatters have been manipulating it in order to make money online. Adsense income has always been a favorite target for them as it is easy to earn and at one point, early on, it was incredibly profitable.

The Golden Age of Adsense

In the beginning all you needed to rank well in Google was to have the most backlinks. A few quick thinkers realized that the quickest way to do this was to create thousands of sites and send a link from each over to your adsense site with the "consolidated student loan" ads plastered on it. These guys had the field to themselves and made a lot of money. Eventually greed and competition took over and woke Google up. Suddenly all the popular searches were ranking really crappy irrelevant sites and Google had a problem.

To fix this Google devises PR and gives more weight to older sites with higher PR.

The black-hatters changed stride and created thousands of sites to send backlinks to hundreds of other sites who's new PR ranking was then used to send hundreds of links to the adsense sites and the money kept rolling in. No problem. Google what else ya got?

Google replied - Links must be from relevant sites. No problem. The black-hatters just created thousands of spammy relevant keyword stuffed sites. The game was back on.

Google pulling out it's hair countered with relevant anchor text and only 1 vote per C-class IP. Ah ha... take that.

"Child's play" said the black-hatter revving up his comment spam generator, "I can have a thousand links by noon".

Fortunately for Google site owners came to their rescue on this one and deleted the spam and started using captchas and filter programs. Who knew people actually hated spam?

For the first time black-hatters realized they were up against more than just Google. The citizenry was catching on and getting tired of their tricks.

The path to accessing free usable links has now become narrow indeed. Some hearty souls are still fishing for them with the aid of trackback spamming software. At the moment most blogs that allow trackbacks don't have the no-follow tag on them. This will change but it's the reason there are so many scraping sites online sending trackbacks. The black-hatters are taking advantage of the trackback weakness and have resorted to snippet scraping to put Google in a bind.

Google has a problem. While the official word is that duplicate content is a no no and will be penalized the reality is that this has been hard to put into practice.

Who are the biggest scraper sites? The "news and Information services" are. How many newspapers pull the same story off of the wire services? Where does CNN and it's cohorts get their news? All the media giants have huge scrapper sites and their posts are all over the place. So is Google going to call the "New York Times" a spammer?

Nope and this is why scraper sites are so prevalent now. If the major news outlets can list story snippets linking back to the source then why can't everybody. Why isn't my small site allowed to post snippets of information the same way? The answer is you are. Google has no way of knowing if you are legitimately providing your readers with useful info or if you are just a spam site scraping content.

This practice will continue until the community comes to Googles aid again and adds the no-follow to trackbacks.

Most black-hatters have taken a different approach. The days of a free lunch with adsense is over but there is still money to be made. Enough in fact to cause them to bite the bullet and just buy links. This is Google's Achilles heel.

As long as Google relies on backlinks to rank PR they can be manipulated by people willing to simply pay high PR sites for a link. The recent crackdown on paid links has not stopped this practice - it has simply pushed it underground. Visit the Link sales page on Digital Point and you can see what a booming business this is. The people who were buying the ads and reviews with textlinkads and PPP were black-hatters buying your PR. Google's latest slap was to put a stop to that - they weren't trying to take away a source of income from people - they just wanted you to use the no-follow tag. By using the no-follow you would eliminate the black-hats and be left with buyers who really want to place an ad on your site or have you review them. We will see how many legitimate buyers there really are - I'm guessing not so many.

Another thing the black-hat community has done is set up and join Blog networks. These are set up by purchasing expired domains that still have PR. You can join these networks and gain access to hundreds of real blogs with existing PR and post your own content on them. This allows you to send highly optimized anchor text links to your main sites. Gaming the system - you bet.

Google has not met this problem yet and faces a challenge in trying to eliminate it. They can't do away with pagerank as they need a way to rank relevancy. Pagerank depends on links and links can be bought without a trail. They can't insist that all links be no-followed or their system will fail - they need do follow links in order to rank pages.

How Google will handle this is anyones guess but I suspect that the days of site wide links are numbered. Google uses Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) to determine just how relevant content links embedded in articles are and now place the most weight on these links. This doesn't negate paid links it just causes people to do more work for them. From Google's point of view site wide links that do-follow can be paid links although blogrolls usually aren't. It's doubtful that penalties will be handed out for these type of links but it's assured that they won't have much weight in the future and will probably be eliminated. If you want to send PR to a friend it's best to do it in a relevant article - relevant to both sites that is.

This brings us up to date as far as the Goggle/Black-hatter tug of war goes but I just want to touch on the effect this history has had on Adsense.

There may still be people who are making outrageous sums of money with it but no where near as many people or as much money as two years ago. Most serious Adsense sites can still make a good dollar but you need a small army of them to approach large earnings. In my case I have been able to cut down on the number of blogs needed by creating blogs that are multi-niche relevant and can target more keywords from the same blog.

The good news is that there are a lot less serious players in the game now. Sure you see the ads all over the net but in reality only a very small amount of sites really know what they are doing and actively pursue Adsense. Most of you just slapped it somewhere on your site and wonder why it doesn't make you more than a few cents a day - if that.

Those that have pursued Adsense have learned to use Google's rules to their advantage. Give Google exactly what they want and they respond by giving you high listings in the search results. The decrease in competition has meant that there are less people vying for the high paying keywords and what's more it's a fairer fight as everybody has to play by the same rules. To rank well you can't just have the most relevant high PR links. You also have to have the most relevant content and not just on one page but your whole site has to show relevancy. LSI has allowed people who can provide relevant useful content to out rank the people who have deep pockets and buy links. There are a lot of low PR sites dominating popular keyword listings - something that didn't happen in the past. You still need links but not as many if your content rocks. Just look at wikipedia.

I have written this post to highlight the fact that Adsense is wide open to those who want to pursue it. It is more accessible to everyone now than it has been in the past. The black-hatters don't dominate the scene anymore primarily due to the work involved, the cost and the fact that they have found other easier methods to make money - primarily in the social network arena.

In my next post I will outline the basic system for earning revenue with Adsense. I want to say up front that there is work involved. You won't be getting rich quick and there are a few ethical hurdles you may have to get over. In my last post I mentioned that I finally had a $200 day but you shouldn't expect this. It has taken me a good year of learning and the best part of another year to implement my system to get to this stage. It has been work. In reality I should only be making half the amount but I got lucky with one keyword. I have yet to find a second one of this calibre. You should expect to create a site that can generate about $10 a day. Once done you work on another and again and again. No tricks (well maybe a few) - just repetition. I will also show you how to create a multi-niche site.

It has taken me two years to make a decent income with this. For me it has been worth the work. I can't promise you anything but if you can stick to something and aren't afraid of a little work then you should be able to accomplish similar results. The best thing about Adsense is that eventually there is little work to do and the money just keeps coming in.

What's in a Keyword?

If you are a first time visitor you probably won't even read this - what on Earth would a cheesy looking blog like this know about making money online. Most first timers take a quick look and then hit the back button and are gone. A percentage leave by clicking a link somewhere on the page. If you are still reading this then chances are you are one of my readers that has got past the cheese and knows that I actually have real content on these pages - the vast majority of it really does explain how I make money with this free no frills Blogspot blog.

In a nutshell I make money with this blog by explaining the SEO techniques I use to target terms like "make money online". I make money by simply ranking high in the serps for terms related to making money. That's it. I don't even need a single person to read a single word of a single post on this blog and I still make money. Good money too.

This blog will be a year old on December 23.

I have spent the past year writing posts that optimize various keywords that I have chosen based on the amount of traffic those keywords generate on the search engines. I built this blog without ever expecting or caring if I ever had a real audience of readers. My goal was simple - generate large amounts of search engine traffic and convert that traffic into Adsense clicks and affiliate sales.

I have had to modify my tactics somewhat from my initial plan due to the fact that I seem to have built up a small but growing readership and in deference to them I have had to shelve my affiliate sales pitches - you won't appreciate me hawking products designed to entice the unwary blogging newcomer. I haven't totally given up on this revenue stream yet it's just I haven't figured out a "Reader Alert" system to warn my regular readers when they should simply ignore a post logged for the purpose of affiliate sales. I will work it back into the mix at some point as there is just too much money sitting on the table with affiliate sales for me to ignore. I know because the first six months I made a decent buck from affiliate sales by optimizing this blog for those types of keywords.

The loss of affiliate sales has been mediated by the sharp increase in Adsense revenue as my main keywords have slowly climbed Google's search engine rankings.

For all of you that think Adsense is crap and doesn't pay much I have news for you... it is still the single easiest and best source of long term income online. If you haven't made money from Adsense it's because you don't know how - not because it doesn't work.

I now rank in the top 1-2 pages on Google for all the main "Make Money" keywords. This past week I finally hit page 1 for several highly searched terms and before I show you what this has meant I want to show you a few of those rankings.

I have yet to reach page 1 for my Prime keyword - "make money online" - but I am on page 2 of Google.com (The US region)

I have however hit page 1 for "make money online" in most of the smaller Google regions like this serp from a query originating in the Netherlands.

There are a couple of things I want to point out as you look at these and the following screenshots. A week ago there were about 170 million competing sites in Google's index. Today there are only about a 10th of this amount.

Google has just quietly cleaned house once again and eliminated millions of sites that are deemed irrelevant. Not just in this niche either - I have noticed this across all my niches. While this will have little effect on most of you, I point it out for interest sake as it is just one more step Google has taken recently to clean up its rankings. For those of us making money online this just means less competition and that's always welcome.

The other thing you should notice is the frequency of Blogspot.com blogs listed on the top search pages. People love bashing Blogger for all sorts of reasons but primarily because it doesn't look as professional or as nice as a self hosted wordpress blog or it is limited in many ways that wordpress blogs aren't. This is all true but when it comes to making money online all those nice looking Web 2.0 blogs aren't in the same ballpark.

Making money online and producing a reader friendly A-list style blog are not the same thing. Every time I hear a Web 2.0 blogger put down Blogger I cringe. People who haven't made a dime online are busy telling other people who haven't made a dime how to make money online by creating fancy looking social network friendly blogs. That is not how you make money online - that is how you try and make a name for yourself. Making a name doesn't mean you make any money. Ranking on top of the search pages does.

What has making the first page meant in terms of earnings? Until last Saturday I was receiving 10-20 visitors a day each from Google for most of these terms. I was on page 2. Since Sunday I have seen up to 10 times the traffic for some of these keywords.

A week ago I was averaging $10-$15 per day in Adsense revenue.

Not a bad increase at all. Guess what? All my niches have gained traffic in the wake of Google's housecleaning. I mentioned a few weeks back that I had finally broke the $200 a day barrier for Adsense earnings.

Look at yesterday's total earnings for my entire network.

Kinda blew by the $300 a day barrier - almost anti-climactic.

A word to the wise for all of you Web 2.0 bloggers - keep your nice blogs and play with them to your hearts content but don't expect to make money with them. If you want to make money online do yourself a favor and learn two things; stop complaining about Google and learn why Google is important and then learn how to SEO.

Think about the fact that once you do the work it just keeps paying you day after day and you don't have to worry about readers and posting schedules or spending all day stumbling and digging. I haven't done a damn thing in three days and the money just rolls in.

There really is an easy way to make real money online and I have just shown you what it is.

Adsense.

How I Make Money Online... over and over again

I've been in Winnipeg for the past couple of weeks and in between taking care of some Lodge business I spent the best part of a day tutoring an old friend in the art of making money online. I've known Jim for about 15 years - he's a mechanic and travels north every few months to work on various pieces of heavy equipment. He is an avid car buff and rebuilds old cars in his spare time. This led him to join several internet communities who shared his passion which then led him to start his own website which led him to learning that some people could make money with a website which led him to start searching for methods in which to do so which led to him finding a blog that explained the process. In Jim's words "I spent 3 days reading the blog before bothering to see who the writer was - I clicked the about page and fell off my chair - it was YOU!"

This has happened frequently over the past year. I have tried to separate my Lodge business from my online business but more and more friends from the "real" world have been coming across this blog and while they don't know me by my online nick name (I got it years ago when I bar tended my way through University) they quickly put it together when they see the about page. Unfortunately this is something I was hoping to avoid. Let me explain.

I spent most of yesterday sitting in the airport waiting on plane delays (weather related) and finally took a peak at my mountain of emails that have accumulated over the last two weeks. As usual there were a few that I wish I had read in a timely fashion. (Court, Monika, Chanya, Frank - sorry, will be getting back to you today) The rest can be categorized as follows; people asking me to review their blog, people asking me to JV with them, people asking to advertise on this blog, people writing really nice comments about how my blog has helped them and not asking for anything (thank you all), people wanting to trade links, people asking to pay me to mentor them and of course the usual spam. There are also a fair number asking me why their blog isn't ranking well on Google without supplying me with all the pertinent info.

Having spent a day with Jim I learned a great deal. He reminded me of just how confusing this whole MMO biz is and gave me an appreciation of just what beginners are facing these days. I confess that I have lost touch with a beginners point of view as it has become a fairly easy game for me. Bruce who runs a work from home blog asked me on the Affiliate Academy forum a few weeks ago about this very issue;

You always make it sound simple but I am questioning what I am missing and probably others are missing as well or everyone would be succeeding like you are.

I worked hard and was seeing some real nice results up until about a month and a half ago. I was a happy camper as I was solidly on page one of Google for a handful of terms and getting more and more search traffic.

I've mentioned this before but now the bottom has come off and I am way down to the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th pages if at all for most of my terms. It started and has continued where I would take two steps back (in the rankings) and then one step back up. Over and over until I am where I am now. (talking about my main blog only here)

I have done nothing differently to my knowledge to start this downfall and so I am wondering how someone like you (or anyone) can have such spectacular success. I have now gotten out of AMA and deleted all my articles so that no more will be published but this all started way before that.

This is my big question: Is it the quality of your links? I have to think that your ability to get better links than most is a very important factor in your success. You write with the best of them but it seems that your SEO can only take you so far.

Bruce's comment has stuck with me and after working with Jim I've mulled this issue over a great deal.

Why does this seem so simple to me and not to others?

Put the coffee pot on and I will tell you all a story.

When I started online web 2.0 didn't exist. Social Media didn't exist. I started out knowing from day 1 that if you are going to make any money online you needed a steady stream of traffic and the only way to get that traffic is with Google.

I have never changed my position on this. Google is still and always has been the best source of traffic online. Social media showed up and everyone jumped on it because it is easy to get traffic using social means. The problem is that social traffic is sporadic, requires hours and hours of work to maintain and in the end it doesn't convert well into money. You have all heard this from me before but in spite of this almost everyone of you still chases it and this is your downfall.

I had several emails informing me of yet another list of "Top 100 Make Money Online Blogs" that doesn't have me included on the list. My readers like to rib me about such things and I must have a hundred emails asking why I am not on the former 45n5 list. The fact is that these lists are part of the problem - many of you are trying to get on these lists and that's because at the heart of the matter you are a blogger looking for recognition from other bloggers. You want to be the next Problogger and spend all your time trying to get attention from other bloggers thinking this is the road to making money. Well yes it is a road but you have no idea about just how much traffic you need from the social arena before any serious advertising offers show up.

Do you realize that most large advertisers won't even look at you if you aren't pulling in at least 250,000 unique visitors a month? Do you have any idea of how much traffic that is? That's 8300 visitors a day - every day. That's 350 visitors every hour or almost 6 visitors a minute - every minute of every hour of every day.

You think that stumbleupon or digg or making a top 100 list or commenting on blogs is going to get 6 visitors a minute to your site month in and month out? And now the harsh part (and I don't mean to insult) you think that your site is so unique and interesting that 250 thousand people will keep coming back to read it. Okay - so you realize that maybe you aren't the most talented and interesting writer so you resort to gimmicks like starting a Top 100 list in hopes that people will spread the word and maybe even use your Badge and send you links. Or you will run a contest. Or you will give away a free ebook to pad your RSS numbers. Or you will come up with any number of tricks or treats to get people to your site. And then they are gone...

Perhaps the hardest thing to realize is that you aren't talented enough to capture 250k of readers based on your writing alone. Let's face it - if you are an exceptional writer word will get out and you will eventually have thousands of followers without you having to chase them down. Think about that. If you need contests and lists to keep people coming back then maybe you aren't producing value that will do it naturally.

But Griz - social media gets me links.

Sure it does - for your name or blog name. All useless. Ranking in Google for your name won't get you traffic.

Yes many of you finally understand the power of keyword anchored backlinks but you are trying to get them using social media.

And that is your downfall. You are at heart a blogger and not an internet marketer. You want to rank on Google but wouldn't it be nice to combine that with becoming well known.

I spend zero time using social media - okay, I have stumbled a few friends blogs in the past and tried everything half assed just to see what the fuss was about but always toss these networks to the side.

I do one thing and one thing only - I study Google.

I experiment constantly while you guys are socializing. I don't read about SEO from others - I learn it first hand. I have developed a system that while changing as G changes still proves to be the most effective way to make money online with the least work involved.

The first rule I have is focus on the task at hand - making money. Toss your dreams of becoming famous out the window as it will simply sidetrack all your efforts.

Find a Niche

Yes I slap up hundreds of blogs to test the waters with but I do have a general system in place in order to find the best niches.

I always start with the goal of making money from Adsense. Why? Because it is the largest advertising network in the world. 5.5 billion in sales last quarter - 1.7 billion in profit. Google has a 67% share of search traffic and is by far the biggest source of traffic online. All the social media sites combined don't handle any where near the daily traffic that Google does.

If you want to make money online then go with who provides the most traffic and use the largest advertiser. In this case Google just happens to be both. A no brainer.

How I do It

I look for niches that can provide me with at least 1000 visitors a day. I didn't say keyword - I said niche.

I look for niches that have enough keywords to provide me with 1000 visitors a day.

I want a niche that lets me build keyword rank in ascending order from least competitive to highly competitive. (I will show you what I mean below)

I want a niche that is competitive.

I want a niche that has lots of Adsense advertisers.

I want a niche that allows me to write long rambling posts.

An Example

Make Money Online

Just for the hell of it let us pretend I could possibly dominate a niche dominated by such well known bloggers as Darren Rowse, Shoemoney,John Chow and the rest of the A-List. And just for a lark let us pretend I could do it using a free Blogger Blog that looks like crap. Why - well maybe if I did people might catch on that you don't need a fancy looking site like the experts claim and that you don't really have to spend money on hosting either. Yes - a bold claim I know. Some people might even figure out that nothing makes people click on Adsense ads better than an ugly site.

So if I was to take on this task how would I do it.

First off I would target a long tail keyword that contains all my shorter competitive keywords in the long tail.

I would use a variation of the long tail for my URL.

"How to Learn Knitting for Beginners"

"How to Make Chocolate Chip Cookies for Beginners"

These are all examples of killer long tails. Why? Because they contain "How to" and "Beginners" in them. One term "How to" is used by people looking for information. I use "Beginners" because people will notice it in the serp's and click on your site because they are likely beginners looking for info on "How to" do something. And they contain my prime and secondary keywords as well. Let me show you.

How to Make money Online for Beginners - least competitive. A Long Tail
How to Make Money Online - more competitive. A secondary keyword.
How to Make Money - very competitive. 50,000 searches. A secondary keyword.
Make Money Online - extremely competitive. 27,000 searches. A secondary keyword.
Make Money - really extremely competitive. - 200,000 searches. A secondary keyword.
Money - the big Kahuna - 3.3 million searches last month. The prime keyword.

This niche also allows for literally hundreds of related keywords that you can rank well for and though the traffic might not be much for any particular term they all add up.

Here is a list of some of them.

Btw - Statcounter is a huge site - millions of visitors. Notice how he monetizes his site? Notice how Technorati monetizes their site? Check out most of the big sites and ask yourself why they use Adsense to earn money? Because it pays better than anything else online...

So - that's how I would plan my site.

Next, while you folks start stumbling and digging and leaving comments to and fro, I get down to the task of building backlinks. Real backlinks. Backlinks that contain my keywords. Backlinks that are contained in posts on other sites. Not sidebar. Not in the do-follow comments. In the posts! And they don't just point to my home page - they vary to all my pages. And they don't just contain my main keyword or main keyword phrases - they contain terms like the list you just read on my stat counter page. They don't appear in bunches - they show up regularly, consistently and continuously.

This is a long slow process and it doesn't get me on those "Top 100" lists and Darren Rowse doesn't send me any link luv but I do start getting search traffic. A little at first when I rank number 1 for my long tail.

Then a little more traffic shows up as I rank well for more terms.

Then a few more terms...

Then a few of the more competitive terms...

The big Kahuna... well actually I don't rank at all for "Money". Yet... if it takes another year or two so be it - it will be worth it.

Now obviously no one in their right mind would set out to take on a competitive niche like Make Money Online using a free ugly blogger blog and hope to succeed against the likes of John Chow and company... ;-) but if you actually focused on what matters (think anchored keyword backlinks) and spent your time gathering up those links then maybe you could just possibly dominate a not so competitive niche. And maybe just maybe you would look at this as a business and do what it takes to get those anchored links. And maybe just maybe you would set aside instant gratification and console yourself to making a not so bad income from Adsense a few years down the road instead of looking for money today.

Then again what the hell do I know about dominating a niche - let alone a competitive one. Maybe I should try and use a wordpress blog to make moneyinstead... come to think of it - why just use one blog to dominate a niche. There are ten spots on Google's page one listings. Imagine the traffic.

Btw - this site doesn't get 250k uniques a month - it only averages 3 visitors a minute so the advertisers aren't lining up yet. Well that's not quite true - I do get a few requests as it seems the advertisers don't just look for social blogs with huge readership - they seem to find me because I rank on top of the serp's. Go figure. The thing is they don't want to pay me what I earn with Adsense so I'm not much interested.

Now all facetiousness aside. I have gone through everything I do online in my posts over the past few years. Does it work? Yes it apparently does. I'm not famous but I do make money at this game which was the whole point in the first place. Would I rather be Darren Rowse? No. He works too hard. I don't.

and that brings me back to Jim and all those who want me to tutor them.

I don't want to.

I used to manage a large Resort hotel and Golf Course. I had 13 Board of Directors and several hundred staff - all of whom made it their purpose in life to bother me. I made lots of money and hated every minute of it. I quit and bought a nice little Fishing Lodge in the middle of nowhere just so I could have some peace and quiet and not work for anyone else. I do what I want when I want and life is good. I started online just to while away my time and found it challenging. The internet was new (still is) and I wanted to see if I could make money on it. I succeeded beyond my expectations - well not really, I expect a lot but I have found my forte online and can duplicate it over and over.

Unlike the A-List and most of you I am not interested in selling you anything and this includes my time. Tutoring people for money means I am working for them and my time becomes their time. Not interested as quite frankly folks I don't need the money and don't want the responsibility of you not succeeding. I am more than happy to tell you all what I do for free and hope that a few of you catch on and succeed at this. Those of you who treat this as a business and spend your money and time wisely can do exactly what I have done. Those of you who just want to be bloggers will have a hard time gaining money or fame from your efforts as you tend to spend most of your time copying and following people that are selling something.

Learn the basics and you will find that everything else will follow. Get ranked on top of Google and you will find that not only do you make money but if your niche is a social one you will also gain readership, advertisers and hell maybe a little fame without ever having to waste time chasing it.

I'm not saying anything new here but I need to say it often as I get new readers every week who find my site while... yup, searching on Google. Invariably they write me and ask how to make money online. They don't want to read two years worth of posts and think I can send them back an answer in an email. I can't. If you are new here then start reading. Those of you who have been with me a while have another question - "How do we get those quality backlinks?". I have answered this privately on a few forums not available to the public. Most of you understand what I have told you but still don't know where to look. I have subtly left a trail in my sidebar and footer sections that will lead you to where you want to go. The lower they appear in my blog the least effective they are and that's as much as I will say about this in public. They will get you started but the most effective means is to get out there and contact the sites that can help you most. It is slow and tedious but that's how I have done it. One link at a time. I can be patient and wait a year or two to reap the rewards. Can you?

I hope this post doesn't come off badly as I do enjoy yakking with my readers but I have created a monster when it comes to emails and people looking for direct help. I simply can't get back to everyone - hell I can't even find the time to read all the mail never mind respond to it. In most cases your answers are already on this blog and you will have to look for them. Don't skip the comments - there is a goldmine of info in the comments and I will try and target the lesser asked questions in future posts. I feel a sense of guilt that this has become larger than I can handle and ask for your understanding if I don't get back to you.

Oh in response to not making those Top 100 lists - I'm on top of the only list that matters - Google's.

I suggest you get on top of Google's list as well and stop wasting time with anyone else's list.

Adwords180 - A review

What is Adwords180?

You will notice a surge in Guru emails in the next little while pushing a product called Adwords 180.

The sales pitch is coy and less than informative but in general you will be told that this system will get you pay per clicks (PPC) at less than a cent a click.

Before I reveal everything to you I want to make two points;

1) This system has been known for awhile but it is only now that someone has figured out a good method to capitalize on it.

2) This is NOT for beginners - you will lose a lot of money if you are not already a competent adwords user.

I would not normally review a product like this on a beginners site but I have received a number of emails asking me about this system and I thought it best to clarify things before a lot of you jump into this.

This is not for beginners for a number of reasons but most notably because the program does not bother to explain the basics of adwords - things like setting up Clickbank accounts, setting up Adwords, navigating the affiliate networks. It leaves out all the stuff other Adwords books use to fluff out their manuals. It does this on purpose because it is aimed at an experienced adwords user.

You'll also notice that the sales letter is a "Blind Letter". This is a marketing tactic that basically doesn't tell you what you are buying until after you buy. Never a good thing for a beginner.

It tells you what you will be able to do but doesn't tell you how you will do it. This tactic is generally used by marketers that have something to hide - and this program is hiding something; it doesn't want to reveal that it only has one trick up it's sleeve - the whole book concentrates on a single aspect of adwords.

This is not a bad thing but by hiding that fact they hope to sell the program to people who think they will be getting a full blown Adwords book. Beware, the book only deals with a single way of using Adwords to get extremely cheap, targeted traffic. If the author came out and told you there was only one trick to teach, it would make the product much less appealing to buyers.

Google's CPM is a method of advertising with Adwords that lets you pay a certain amount for 1000 impressions of your ad. The drawback of this method is that regardless if you get clicks or not, you still get billed.

While you won’t pay too much for 1000 impressions, often only a couple of dollars, CTRs are usually really bad and you end up paying more per click than otherwise and this results in a quick campaign ending.

Adwords 180 sets out a strict criteria that allows you to pick the best pages on the best sites for your CPM ads to appear on.

This system will allow you to find the right page for your precisely tuned ad to appear on. You will also know before hand how much traffic you can expect the chosen page to receive which tells you in advance what you’ll be paying.

By using the methods outlined in Adsense180, you should and can get CTRs of 25% on your ads.

Using CPM, a decent bid for 1000 impressions of your ad is $2. Remember that this guarantees you nothing at all except that your ad will appear 1000 times. You might not get even one click…

If done right though, you can realistically get a 25% CTR or 250 clicks. If you do the math this would bring your cost per click down to $0.008 which is incredible. Less than one cent a click.

First, your CTR goes way up, and that tells Google your ad is perfect for the visitors on the page. Google likes that and they may reward you by eliminating your competition.

Instead of showing your ad with 3 others, Google gives you the whole ad block box to yourself - no competition. This boosts your CTR up another notch and the ad should pull a decent amount of traffic to your site.

The whole concept hinges on the fact that other advertisers can’t compete with you since you own the whole ad block.

Conclusion on Adwords180

If you know what you’re going to do with this cheap traffic and you have a plan to make it convert into money - through Adsense, Affiliate landing pages or Squeeze pages - and you have the money to invest in the method, then by all means purchase Adwords180 but...

Beware of this problem.

If you don’t know how to write ads that grab attention, you won’t be able to do it.

If you can’t convert the traffic into subscribers, buyers or Adsense Clicks, you’ll lose money in spite of the traffic.

All beginners should take note that making conversions is the key and ultimately remains the major hurdle in nearly all Adwords Marketers’ campaigns.

If you know how to set up successful campaigns and you want cheap traffic, go ahead and get Adwords 180. If you don't have experience in these areas then don't even consider this - you will be wasting your money.

I was unable to resist the urge to buy Jonathan Leger's ebook "$7 Dollar Secrets". I spend more money on coffee on any given day so I thought what the heck. I can't say I expected much for seven bucks and on one hand I wasn't disappointed. On the other hand he provides a clever and invaluable download that is worth far more than 7 dollars. It's 30 pages of mostly fluff about stuff I already new. Must have taken all of 15 minutes to read.

Would I recommend it? Depends. If you have experience in the "make money online" field then you won't get much from this program that you haven't already tried or at least know about (there are a couple of exceptions). If you are a beginner then this is probably an ideal starters project.

In essence the book explains the strategy behind writing and affiliating ebooks. Nothing new here. What was worth the 7 bucks was the down-loadable scripts and PDF info that was included. Having written ebooks myself I know how much work is involved in writing it, setting it all up and then coordinating your landing page, Paypal, download page etc. To my surprise Jonathan provides a much simpler and faster system for doing all this. Idiot proof actually. If you have never produced an ebook but want to then I strongly encourage you to spend the 7 bucks. If you are a beginner then this is the best program I have seen for teaching you how to do it.

The Scripts

He gives you a complete set of pages that set up and install on your site that looks after the entire process involved in selling ebooks online. This is worth far more than 7 dollars my friend. The bonus is that it is already configured for affiliates to use in selling your products. You write an ebook (he provides some links that help you find what topics or niches are popular) and then use the scripts provided to immediately start selling it online. It's fast, easy and even a complete beginner could have an ebook online before the day is out. (assuming they have written one or have resale rights to an existing one)

What you get for 7 Bucks

- 30 pages of text, covering ebook publishing and sales techniques

- provides the software that allows you to write a PDF ebook for free - beginners take note as this is worth a few bucks.

- a complete set of scripts that allow you to sell your ebook online instantly - this is the best value of the package.

- a turnkey setup that allows affiliates to start selling your ebook without the hassle of clickbank.

- provides numerous links for related products (ie. where to get book covers etc.)

- a concise step by step strategy for producing and marketing ebooks.

Note: The scripts can be used for selling other peoples ebooks as well as your own. If you are an affiliate with tons of resale rights ebooks that you have collected but have never done anything with then this program is ideal. I must have a hundred such ebooks that are collecting dust on my hard drive - now I have a fast and simple way to start selling them.

In summation it's hard not to recommend something that only costs 7 dollars. As I said if you are an experienced ebook publisher then this is probably not for you. I would say that the script package will simplify your efforts tremendously though and you might do well to pick them up if nothing else in this is new to you.

For beginners I would encourage you to get this as you will not find a better resource online for producing ebooks.

Both men are professional marketers, they teach the same basics as I do and offer one on one mentoring in this business. MindGenius 2.5: An Overview

I had the opportunity several weeks ago to speak with Dustin Newport, Director of Business & Marketing for MindGenius about their flagship product MindGenius 2.5. I always find it interesting to learn just how these applications come about and their genesis. Dustin shared with me that MindGenius came about as the result of the work of the parent company Gael Quality Group, which is a large consulting company in the compliance and quality management field. In March 2008, MindGenius Ltd, spun out of the parent company into new quarters with a new vision of where they could take this exciting mindmapping application. For the past month I have been using MindGenius and find it to be a powerful, nimble, and straightforward mindmapping application that runs on Windows platform.

When you first start off using MindGenius you can select from a number of redesigned templates to start your mind map session. One of the features which is unique to MindGenius is the ability to use the Question Assistance when developing your mind map. With the Question Assistance turned on you will see a array of topics with questions to help jump start your creative thinking process. There are a number of different topics and associated questions for each of the topics in MindGenius. Once your select your template you are ready to start your brainstroming or planning session using MindGenius. MindGeniis sticks to the core of mind mapping application letting you quickly get your ideas out on the computer screen. As a user you simply start typing and a new entry box pops up to enter your idea. If you like you can format the entry within the dialog box and press enter to add an idea to your mind map. I found the means to enter and idea fast and fluid. To add a series of subtopics all you need to do is select the topic and start typing. MindGenius comes with a library of map markers that you can add to your mind map that can act as a means to create a new map based on the category of the marker. I found this to be a fast and efficient way to look at tasks in my mind map that are assigned to a particular category. Likewise, you can assign a resource to each topic or subtopic in MindGenius and then with a click of the mouse create a new map with all of the tasks sorted by Resource. When working on larger projects this is an invaluable tool to get the big perspective on who is responsible for each of the tasks in the project. MindGenuis does not have the capabilities at this time to visually display what percent of the task is complete. Another unique feature of MindGenius is the Map Explorer which is displayed on the left hand side in a pane that lets you quickly move about your map within an outline mode. As soon as you select a topic in the Map Explorer the topic comes into focus with all the associated subtopics. Having a Map Explorer makes it very easy to move through large maps and can be used to move through your maps when you want to use it for presentations. By simply using the down arrow keys you can move through your MindGenius map via the Map Explorer so that the focus is always on the specific topic or branch. Pairing up MindGenius with a data projector to present the information is a great way to communicate and share your ideas.

MindGenius is fairly typical of mind mapping applications and allows you to link to web sites, files, PDF's. I personally would prefer to be able to embed certain files in my mind maps or at least give me the option to choose between embedding or linking. MindGenius allows you to set boundaries as well as adding floating and call out text. You can also display relationships between ideas on your mind maps buy using the insert Relationship option. Likewise, it is easy to add a note to a topic or subtopic by typing into the Notes pane. If you choose you can also add a watermark to the background when printing your maps. When it is time to distribute your MindGenius maps you can use the free viewer or distribute it as an executable(.exe) file. You can also decide to export your map as HTML and upload it to your server so that others can view it on te web. Or better ye,t export it to the ubiquitous PDF format so that you can email it to your colleagues who can open it with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.

MindGenius offers seamless integration of your mind maps into the Microsoft Office Suite of products. If you are interested in using MindGenius as part of your project management solution you will find outputting your mind map to Microsoft Project a snap. I found it very easy to move my MindGenius map right into Microsoft Project with all of the data completely intact. Once you start the export process to Microsoft Project you have an array of options as to what you would like to move over to Microsoft Project. You can click on this link to view an overview of MindGenius. You also have the option to export your maps to Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Visio.

MindGenius is an easy to use mind mapping application that you should be up and running in no time. MindGenius is a straightforward mind mapping application with some unique features that should make it a valuable tool in your arsenal for brainstorming, project planning, and business consulting. The Map Explorer feature along with the Questioning Assistance Pane add some unique functionality to this well thougth out application. My favorite feature which should be ideal for anyone using this tool for project planning is the ability to create a new map based on the resources or categories attached to a topic or subtopic. Overall you will find MindGenius an easy to use mind mapping application with a small footprint. I would hope thatMindGenius will continue to build on their fine product and modernize the interface and refresh the graphics and the overall look of the program.

Federer ready for historic final

World number two Roger Federer will try to set a new landmark for men's tennis when he takes on American Andy Roddick in the Wimbledon final on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Swiss hopes to win a sixth Wimbledon title and so break Pete Sampras's all-time Grand Slam mark with a record 15th major victory.

Roddick, 26, ended British hopes with his semi-final win over Andy Murray and hopes to add to his 2003 US Open title.

But Federer goes into the match with an 18-2 lead in meetings between the pair.

And the five-time champion knows that a victory will also see him regain the number one ranking from Rafael Nadal, who was unable to defend his Wimbledon title because of injury.

It would cap a magnificent few weeks for Federer after he finally completed his set of Grand Slam titles with victory in the French Open last month.

"Tension always comes back for any Grand Slam final," he said. "Knowing you only have one match to go definitely changes your mindset. Records are part of this great match so it's obviously an incentive to try really hard."

Federer and Roddick meet in the final at the All England Club for the third time, with Federer having won in straight sets in 2004 and in four sets the following year.

The American finally ended an 11-match losing streak that had lasted five years when he beat Federer at the Miami Masters last year, but the Swiss has since beaten Roddick three more times.

"We've played so many times against each other, we're almost the same age," said Federer. "He's improved his game again, which was important for him and necessary too, so it's going to be a good test for me."

Roddick's hopes centre on his huge serve, which proved too much for Murray with 21 aces and a first-serve percentage of 75% in their semi-final.

"I always said that serve makes him so dangerous," said Federer. "No matter what surface you play him on, no matter where you play him and how bad the record is for him, he'll always have that shot just because he can serve so great.

"It's hard to get a read on it. I've had times when I read it incredibly well - I couldn't believe how well I did read it - and I had days when I didn't read it.

"That's the strength of a great server, he doesn't only have a great first serve but he probably has the best second serve in the game as well. That what makes it hard to break him, and he's good enough off the baseline that he can always make it a really tough match."

Federer has continued adding to his incredible list of records over the last fortnight, reaching his 21st consecutive Grand Slam semi-final, his 16th out of the last 17 Grand Slam finals, and a seventh straight Wimbledon final.

And Roddick insists that the two previous Wimbledon final defeats by Federer have not damaged his confidence ahead of Sunday.

"I don't look back on them negatively at all," he said. "I've never made any apologies for making a Grand Slam final before. I certainly don't look back on those like that.

"I know how tough it is but I'm excited about this one. I didn't know if I was going to get to play a final of Wimbledon again. I'm certainly thankful to have that opportunity."

Honeybee mobs overpower hornets

Honeybees mount a very effective mobbing defence

Honeybee hordes use two weapons - heat and carbon dioxide - to kill their natural enemies, giant hornets.

Japanese honeybees form "bee balls" - mobbing and smothering the predators.

This has previously been referred to as "heat-balling", but a study has now shown that carbon dioxide also plays a role in its lethal effectiveness.

In the journal Naturwissenschaften, the scientists describe how hornets are killed within 10 minutes when they are trapped inside a ball of bees.

Japanese giant hornets, which can be up to 5cm long, are voracious predators that can devastate bees' nests and consume their larvae.

But, if the bees spot their attacker in time, they mount a powerful defence in the form of a bee ball. This study found that the heat inside the bee ball alone was not enough to reliably kill the hornets.

Giant hornets were taped to temperature and gas probes

"They can survive for 10 minutes at a temperature up to 47C, and the temperature inside the bee balls does not rise higher than 46C," said Fumio Sakamoto, a researcher from Kyoto Gakuen University in Japan, and one of the authors of the study.

His team recreated experimental bee balls and took direct measurements from inside them.

They anaesthetised giant hornets and fixed them to the tip either of a thermometer probe, or the inlet of a gas detector.

Once the hornets recovered from their anaesthesia, the probes were touched to the bees' nest.

"The bee ball formed (around the hornet) immediately," said Dr Sakamoto.

After 10 minutes the bees were packed solidly enough around the probe to be removed from the nest in a distinct ball.

As the temperature inside the ball increased to more than 45C, the carbon dioxide level also rose sharply.

In a parallel experiment, the scientists found that in an atmosphere relatively high in carbon dioxide, the temperature at which hornets could survive for 10 minutes was lowered.

"So we concluded that carbon dioxide produced inside the bee ball by the honeybees is a major factor, together with temperature, involved in the bees' defence."

The bee ball formed as a bump on the bottom of the nest

Dr Sakamoto is not sure, at this point, whether the bees were effectively "gassing" the hornets, or simply depriving them of oxygen.

"Either way, the carbon dioxide increase and/or the oxygen decrease lowered the temperature that was lethal to the hornets, " he told BBC News.

"We are going to do the additional experiments about this point using mixed air of various oxygen and carbon dioxide (concentrations)."

The mob of bees also appeared to operate in "two phases".

"The hornet may be killed during the first 0-5 minute period, in which the highest level of heat production and carbon dioxide emissions take place," said Dr Sakamoto.

This might suggest that the bees are aware of what physiological state the hornet is in.

Dr Sakamoto said: "The latter 5-10 min period may be free running to ensure their victim's death."

Americas group suspends Honduras

The Organization of American States has suspended Honduras in protest at the ousting of President Manuel Zelaya.

The rare decision was made at an emergency meeting of the 35-member group in Washington.

It comes ahead of Mr Zelaya's expected return home on Sunday, accompanied by several Latin American leaders.

The new government has threatened to arrest him. The BBC's Stephen Gibbs, in Honduras, says there are growing fears of violence.

"The clock definitely does seem to be counting down to what we are suspecting might be an extraordinary showdown," our correspondent says.

Mr Zelaya was forced to leave the country by the military as he pressed on with plans to hold a non-binding public consultation on 28 June, to ask people whether they supported moves to change the constitution.

On Saturday, he again said he intended to defy his country's new government by returning home.

"I am organising my return to Honduras... This is the return of the president elected by the sovereign will of the people," he said, saying he would arrive between 1300 and 1400 local time (1900 to 2000 GMT).

He called on his followers to join him "without arms" on his arrival in the capital, Tegucigalpa.

He said he would be accompanied by President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner of Argentina and Rafael Correa of Ecuador.

Thousands of his supporters are expected to be at the airport.

Mr Zelaya also warned the new administration of interim leader Roberto Micheletti that the international community had turned against them.

"Your actions will not go unnoticed because the international courts will have to try you for the genocide that you are carrying out in our country, in suppressing rights and repressing our people," he said.

The Honduran interim government says it acted within the law and has the backing of the majority of the population.

Church warning

Earlier, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Honduras called on the ousted president not to return from exile, in order to avoid provoking what he called a "bloodbath".

Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez said nobody had been killed since Mr Zelaya lost power, and he appealed to him to check his actions before it was too late.

The country is becoming increasingly polarised, our correspondent says.

Each day there are mass demonstrations, both in support and against the government.

Mr Zelaya, a wealthy businessman, is a left-wing politician and supporter of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

His opponents, which includes the Supreme Court and a majority in Parliament, accuse him of seeking to prolong his rule.

He had wanted to hold a popular vote on convening a constitutional convention - a move that could have removed the current one-term limit for presidents.

LONDON: Boy wizard Harry Potter is back in cinemas later this month with the sixth instalment of the movie franchise, and another box office bonanza looks assured for the Warner Bros. studio.

‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ hits screens on July 15, promising high-speed action, dark and dangerous battles with the forces of evil, budding romance at Hogwarts school for wizards and the expected death of a prominent character.

The wait has been a long one for Potter fans around the world who have followed the fate of Harry and his friends through the seven best-selling books by British author J.K. Rowling.

Warner Bros. pushed the release date of Half-Blood Prince back from 2008, leaving a two-year gap since the fifth movie ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ and the final novel ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.’

The release of Potter books and films are major events for the entertainment industry, both because of the passion fans share for the stories, dubbed ‘Pottermania’ in the media, and the amount of money they generate.

The seven Harry Potter books, which began in 1997, have sold more than 400 million copies worldwide and turned Rowling into a multi-millionaire publishing phenomenon.

Magic numbers:

The five movies released so far have grossed $4.5 billion in ticket sales, and box office experts see little reason to doubt that the sixth instalment will fall within the $800 million to $1 billion range, a huge amount for a single film.

‘This is just a remarkable franchise that has consistently drawn blockbuster numbers each time out, and it is hard to imagine this picture not continuing that trend,’ said Brandon Gray, president of tracking firm Box Office Mojo.

Pent-up demand is expected to ensure a big opening in the key North American market and in countries like Britain, after which word-of-mouth will be a key factor.

The fact that the Potter story is now complete may mean some fans lose interest, but US advance online ticket sales look strong, according to MovieTickets.com.

Two films are being made from the Deathly Hallows book, part one scheduled for release in November 2010 and part two in July 2011.

In Half-Blood Prince, Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore is intent on preparing student Potter for a final showdown with the evil Lord Voldemort, who is seeking to tighten his grip on the worlds of wizards and non-wizards, or ‘Muggles.’

Teleamazonas said it would no longer be allowed to broadcast the often satirical exploits of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie, between 6:00 am and 9:00 pm, pending a government investigation, AFP reported.

A government-backed regulator will assess the program’s impact on ‘boys, girls and teenagers,’ and wants to restrict its broadcast ‘to assure the protection’ of younger audiences.

‘It is not going to go off the air, but we had to change its slot to 5:30 am,’ Pablo Ortiz, Teleamazonas’ lawyer told AFP.

The state TV watchdog said it was concerned by the impact of ‘programs and messages that promote violence, racial and gender discrimination.’

The body recently pushed Japanese cartoon ‘Dragon Ball Z’ from its normal slot.
The investigation is expected to last 90 days.

Swine flu threatens healthcare in poor countries

LONDON: Britain is to change the way it deals with the H1N1 flu outbreak after projections indicate that over 100,000 new cases a day could be emerging by the end of August.

Faced with such huge numbers, the focus will switch to treating the disease rather than trying to contain it. Confirmed cases are doubling every week, putting pressure on health services, Health Secretary Andy Burnham said on Thursday.

‘On this trend, we could see over 100,000 cases per day by the end of August — though I stress this is only a projection,’ he told the House of Commons.

The first doses of a pandemic flu vaccine would arrive in Britain by the end of August, with 60 million doses available by the end of the year, enough for 30 million people, or about half the population. Most people who have caught the infection have only suffered mild symptoms, but in a small minority it has proved more severe, with three deaths in Britain so far.

‘We have always known it would be impossible to contain the virus indefinitely and that at some point we would have to move away from containment to treating the increasing numbers falling ill,’ Burnham said.

Antivirals will no longer be offered to all patients with the flu or showing symptoms. Instead antivirals will be targeted at the most vulnerable — those already at risk from seasonal flu, as well as pregnant women and children under five.

‘I know that local GP surgeries and hospitals are coming under increased pressure,’ Burnham said. ‘It's important we do everything we can to reduce the strain on local health services.’

Attempts to trace people who have been in contact with flu sufferers would now stop. Health authorities will also no longer compile daily updates on the number of new cases, with estimates of the general spread being issued instead.

People concerned they have caught the H1N1 flu should check the NHS website or call the Swine Flu Information Line for more information. If still concerned, they should contact their family doctor, who will diagnose them over the phone, rather than waiting for a laboratory confirmation.

If the infection is confirmed, the doctor will issue an authorisation allowing a ‘flu friend’ to collect antivirals from a collection point at a pharmacy or a community centre. Later, all diagnosis will be done by a national swine flu service, with authorisation for antivirals issued online or through a call centre.

Public health experts backed the changes. ‘It's a much more sensible approach,’ said Alan Maryon Davis, president of the Faculty of Public Health.

‘It means we can conserve the antiviral stocks that we have got, just in case the virus comes back with a vengeance later in the year,’ he told BBC television.

There are now 7,447 confirmed H1N1 flu cases in Britain, with infections spreading fastest in the southwest, the east, the east Midlands and in London, which all saw more than a three-fold increase over the past week.

UN chief to visit Suu Kyi in Myanmar

YANGON: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Myanmar Friday on a difficult mission to press the chief of the ruling military junta to free opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners.

Ban touched down in the commercial hub Yangon on the day the detained Nobel Peace laureate appeared at a prison court for the latest hearing in her internationally condemned trial.

The UN chief said he would directly urge regime leader Senior General Than Shwe for permission to visit the 64-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi in jail but admitted the scale of the challenge he faces to win her freedom.

‘It is a very tough mission,’ he told reporters shortly after his arrival on a commercial flight from Singapore.

‘One of my objectives is to obtain the release of all political prisoners including Aung San Suu Kyi,’ he said, adding that he was also going to ‘convey the concern of the international community’ and press for reconciliation and democracy.

Ban immediately transferred to a Yangon hotel and was to fly later Friday to the remote capital Naypyidaw — purpose-built by the ruling generals in 2006 — to meet Than Shwe at 2:00 pm local time.

Rights groups have warned that the trip will be a ‘huge failure’ if he does not secure the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, who has spent most of the last two decades in detention.

The pro-democracy icon was transferred from house arrest to Yangon’s notorious Insein prison in May for trial on charges of breaching the terms of her house arrest after an American man swam to her lakeside home.

Aung San Suu Kyi faces up to five years in jail if convicted and critics have accused the junta of using the trial to keep her locked up for elections that the ruling generals have promised in 2010.

She appeared in court Friday but the trial was adjourned for a week because judges had not received a Supreme Court judgement barring two defence witnesses, said Nyan Win, spokesman for her National League for Democracy (NLD).

In a meeting between Aung San Suu Kyi and her lawyers at the jail Thursday, Nyan Win said she called on Ban to take Than Shwe to task over ‘the release of political prisoners, dialogue with the opposition and free and fair elections.’

Ban earlier made an apparent reference to concerns over the timing of his visit while her trial is still underway, saying he was aware that he was coming to Myanmar ‘under certain uncertainties.’

‘I will try to meet with representatives of all registered political parties including Aung San Suu Kyi, that’s my hope. But I have to raise this issue with the Senior General directly, in person,’ he said in Singapore on Thursday.

As well as Than Shwe, Ban said he will also meet with Prime Minister Thein Sein and representatives of all registered political parties and former armed groups.

Ban has faced recent criticisms for his softly-softly approach to the job of secretary general, but diplomats say he is hoping his quiet brand of diplomacy will pay dividends with Myanmar’s generals.

The visit is Ban’s first to Myanmar since he persuaded the junta to accept international aid in the wake of devastating Cyclone Nargis in May 2008, which killed around 138,000 people.

He is set to visit the region hit by Nargis on his latest trip.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been in detention or under house arrest for 13 of the last 19 years since the junta refused to recognise the NLD’s landslide victory in Myanmar’s last elections, in 1990.

Human Rights Watch said Ban should not accept the apparent concession from the junta of returning her to house arrest, instead of imprisoning her, as a sign of a successful visit.

‘Time and again, the UN has politely requested Aung San Suu Kyi’s release, but her ‘release’ back to house arrest would be a huge failure,’ Kenneth Roth, New York-based HRW’s executive director, said in a statement.

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, has been ruled by the military since 1962.

TEHRAN: A powerful Iranian cleric said on Friday that some local British embassy staff will be put on trial for allegedly stoking post-election unrest, a move set to plunge already strained ties to a new low, AFP reported.

‘In these incidents, their embassy had a presence, some people were arrested. Naturally they will be put on trial, they have made confessions,’ Ahmad Jannati, the head of Iran’s Guardians Council, said at Friday prayers.

A total of nine local staff were initially arrested late last month but the British government said seven have now been released, while Iranian state television has said only one remains in custody.

‘We are concerned and we are checking the reports,’ a Foreign Office spokeswoman said. ‘It is our top priority to secure the release of all of the embassy staff.’

Iran accused the embassy employees of instigating riots in the unrest that erupted over the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which his rivals said was fraudulent and marred by widespread irregularities.

Britain has rejected the allegations against the embassy as baseless.

Jannati, who is close to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and a strong Ahmadinejad supporter, said the country’s ‘enemies’ had been plotting a ‘velvet revolution’ in the Islamic republic.

He said the Foreign Office had predicted ‘street riots’ around the June 12 election and that it had warned its nationals to stay away from public places.

Khamenei described Britain, which has long had turbulent relations with Iran and a long history of mistrust, as the ‘most evil’ of its enemies.

EU nations are considering a proposal from Britain to recall all their ambassadors from Tehran in protest and the Swedish presidency said on Thursday the 27-member body was ‘ready to take action’ if the staff are not freed.

Britain appears to have replaced the United States, often dubbed ‘the Great Satan,’ by Iranian leaders, as Tehran’s top foe in the wake of the election that triggered the worst crisis since the Islamic revolution in 1979.

Last month, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran may downgrade ties with Britain, after the two governments expelled each other’s diplomats.

Tehran has also expelled the BBC correspondent and arrested a British-Greek
reporter.

Iranian officials have been particularly angered by the launch of the BBC’s Persian satellite channel this year, which they accuse of fanning the flames in the election dispute.

The roots of the mutual distrust date back to the 1800s when Iran, then Persia, was trapped in the colonial rivalry between Russia and Britain.

In 1953, nationalist Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh was overthrown in a CIA-organised coup with support from British operatives after he nationalised the Anglo-Iranian oil company, the forerunner to British Petroleum.

Diplomatic relations were severed when the British mission in Tehran was closed in 1980 after British special forces stormed the Iranian embassy in London to end a hostage siege.

A 1989 fatwa by Iran’s revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini against British writer Salman Rushdie sparked a new rupture in ties that were only restored in 1999.

In 2007, Iran seized 15 British navy personnel on patrol in waters between Iraq and Iran and held them for 12 days.

Britain is also among the strongest opponents of Iran’s nuclear drive, which London and Washington say is aimed at developing atomic weapons, a claim rejected by Tehran.

The Guardians Council, made up of 12 unelected jurists and clerics, is one of the most powerful bodies in Iran. It has the authority to interpret the constitution, holds veto power over legislation passed in parliament and ratifies election results.
